• Strong Narration. The audiobook narrator of the first two books was fantastic and his interpretation added a lot to the story.
• Complex Characters. Sebastian has achromatopsia preventing him from seeing color and light sensitivity, but never uses this as a crutch and forges onward.
• Unlikable Lead. MC described as a Gary Sue and hypocrite who never faces consequences for bad actions, with the narrator failing to call him out.
• Trauma. Calvin Winter suffers from PTSD from his military service.
• Violence. The story involves murder investigations with a heart found under floorboards.
• Frequent Heat. Heavy on sex scenes, atypical for mysteries; not particularly intense or long but notable in quantity.
